2013 FALL EDITION NEWSLETTER

NCBIDA is excited to kick off our new fall read-a-thon fundraiser called Readers Matter! Join other book lovers to raise funds to support dyslexia awareness and education. Instead of racing in a triathlon or running a marathon, you can read books through December 31st while supporters pledge money for your efforts. You can create your own reader’s page or support other readers. By participating as a reader or supporting a reader, you will make a difference in the lives of those with dyslexia. NCBIDA will use funds raised to bring more awareness of this common learning disability to the public through our speaker programs and our dyslexia simulation, Experience Dyslexia®. Additionally, funds will support teacher scholarships for training in multisensory structured language education. Students, parents, and teachers are all encouraged to participate!

SmoklerWhile registration is now open for Readers Matter, join us for our official kick-off event on October 8 at Books, Inc. for an evening of food, drink, book-buying, and conversation with guest author Kevin Smokler. Kevin is the author of Practical Classics: 50
Reasons to Reread 50 Books You Haven’t Touched Since High School. Join us on Tuesday, October 8th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Books, Inc. in Laurel Village, San Francisco.

In this newsletter, you’ll read about a child named Molly who did not get the help she needed for several years because her school did not understand dyslexia. You’ll also read about why some schools and educators do not use the term “dyslexia,” but why it’s important to embrace this word and all that it means. Our Readers Matter campaign is one way you can help students like Molly. It starts with awareness of dyslexia and then with teacher training. Readers do matter… Let’s make more of them.

Sincerely,
Frances Dickson
