Multisensory Math: An Overview Workshop of Hands-on Instruction for Meeting the Needs of All Learners

Two-Part Workshop:  October 2nd & October 9th
9am – 1:30pm (pacific)

Presenter: Marilyn Zecher, M.A CALT

The Multisensory Math Approach is appropriate for all but essential for some. Our introductory workshop offers strategies for teaching mathematics to all students in a standards-based curriculum. Originally developed for teaching students with language-based disabilities or dyslexia, as well as other related learning challenges; this approach incorporates strategies from the Orton- Gillingham tradition of literacy instruction, the evidence-based Concrete- Representational-Abstract Instructional Sequence, explicit instruction and precise instructional language to meet the needs of all learners.

The Multisensory Math Approach incorporates lessons from neuroscience, the recommendations of the NCTM and the What Works Clearinghouse as well as best practices in mathematics instruction. Join us for two four-hour sessions of hands-on, conceptually based mathematics. This overview workshop is appropriate for all educators including inclusion teachers, special educators, resource and ESOL teachers, academic support professionals and parents.

Day One: Research and rational behind the approach, core instructional strategies for meeting the needs of all students through differentiation, foundation concepts and skills in K-2 mathematics including numeracy, place value concepts and basic operations. Explicit conceptually accurate instructional language is key.

Day Two: The perfect storm: When Reading and Math Meet, multiplication and division concepts and patterns for diverse learning populations, fractions and decimals don’t need to be daunting, ideas for intervention and paving the way for algebra.

Take-aways: After this workshop experience, participants:

  • Will be able to describe the core deficit in mathematics and list strategies for remediation.
  • Will be able to describe the function and organization of our place value system and provide ways to teach it to diverse student populations.
  • Will be able to describe several impacts of dyslexia and related disability on the learning and teaching of mathematics.
  • Will be able to list several strategies for supporting students with learning challenges in developing fluency for math facts.
  • Will be able to list several strategies for developing fraction concepts and proportional reasoning

To fully participate, Participants should have available for hands-on practice:

  • 150 craft sticks and 10-12 ponytail elastics
  • A small selection of base ten place value blocks or printable reproduction
  • Pattern Blocks or printable version provided: 4 hexagons, 4 trapezoids, 6rhombi, 6-8 triangles
  • Rectangular Fraction Tiles 1-2 sets or printable versions provided
  • 1 shoestring or craft lace and a selection of multicolored 9mm pony beads. (Iuse neon colors)
  • Dry erase board and dry erase marker

Handouts:

  • 1 major workshop handout- printed in full color
  • 1 manipulatives activities handout – printed in full colo

Additional Information:
