Plan Now for Summer Teacher Training

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

This summer offers several opportunities for educators to build their skills by enrolling in structured literacy trainings. These include Orton-Gillingham-based programs in San Francisco and Los Altos, and Slingerland trainings in San Jose. Participants who enroll in programs that include a practicum may be eligible for NorCal IDA scholarship support.

IDA NorCal is once again sponsoring a 40-hour Yoshimoto Orton-Gillingham International (Y-OGI) Basic training this summer in San Francisco. Dates are July 30 to August 3, and the location is Mercy High School. Instructor Ron Yoshimoto’s training targets those who work with students in early elementary grades and offers practical, assessable strategies that can be implemented immediately. The cost to IDA members or groups of 4 or more is $720/per person. Non-IDA members pay $750.  Registration info will be available on our website soon. We will also send out an email to our mailing list when the link is up.

Nancy Redding, EdD, will offer Orton-Gillingham Approach Teacher/Tutor training at Los Altos Christian School in June and July. This training meets part of the coursework requirements for membership at specified levels in the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE). The 40-hour Classroom Educator training will run June 25-29, 2018 (Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-5:00 pm) at a cost of $725. A subsequent three-day training at the same site, from July 9-11 costs $225 and provides additional instruction for participants interested in the Associate level of AOGPE membership, which includes working with students in one-on-one settings.

Note that completion of a subsequent practicum is required to obtain Academy membership and certification at either level. IDA NorCal scholarships may be available for those individuals who are completing a practicum for either level of training.

Slingerland training in San Jose will include Introductory Level Comprehensive and Third Level Continuum courses under instructor Shirley Hitchcock. Trainings take place May 29, 30, 31 (4:00-9:00 pm), and June 6-29 (8:00 am-4:00 pm) at Valley Christian Elementary School in San Jose. The course includes a practicum. Graduate-level extension credits are available through the University of San Diego. The fee is $2,750 for either course level. Click here for details.

Wilson International has not yet established dates for their summer trainings, in the Bay Area. We will post them on our website once they are confirmed. Please note that there will be no Slingerland training in San Francisco this year.
