President’s Letter

Did you know that October is Dyslexia Awareness Month?  Here at IDA NorCal, we work to increase our focus on spreading awareness about dyslexia throughout the month.  One way to do this is to share solid, research-based information with teachers, parents, and community members.  If you haven’t already seen them, visit our branch website resource page and the  IDA national website. Both have a wide variety of information sheets, infographics, and articles that you can peruse, download, and share with others.  These tools can help you support student’s academic, social and emotional, reading/spelling, and language needs as a parent, advocate, specialist, or teacher.

If you have an hour or two to devote to virtual learning this month, see the article below for programs our events committee has highlighted. We regularly post events of interest on our Facebook and Instagram pages, so check those for additional offerings.

Looking for a fun dyslexia awareness activity?  Join us in Rock for Dyslexia, a month-long contest created by the Oregon IDA branch and supported by the Georgia IDA branch.  People around the country are participating in this raffle and digital awareness event.  If you or your students are artistic, want to help spread awareness about dyslexia, and would like the opportunity to win a cash prize, this is the event for you!  Break out your art and craft supplies, some rocks, and your camera. Find details here on how to participate. If you prefer a group experience, join IDA board and community members to decorate a rock at the San Carlos library, 610 Elm Street, San Carlos, on Monday, October 28th from 3:30 pm-5 pm.  We’ll provide the rocks and art supplies; you bring the talent.  We hope to see you there!

Finally, it’s not too late to register for the IDA annual conference, DyslexiaCon24, in Dallas, Texas, from October 24th – 26th.  It features scores of informational sessions for parents, educators, and others interested in helping those with dyslexia.  You can attend in person or register for on-demand recorded sessions. This year’s conference will offer some extra fun events to mark IDA’s 75th anniversary.  Find all the details and register here.
