This presentation will examine some of the increasing research in cognitive neuroscience and education on the different effects of digital and print mediums on the development of reading in children and adolescents. There will be no binary description, but rather an examination of the advantages and disadvantages for each medium on the development of deep reading processes like background knowledge, inference, empathy, critical thinking, and the contemplative function underlying insight and creative thought. The goal of this presentation is a hopeful, but cautionary approach to the use of digital mediums in reading development in different individuals, including those with dyslexia.  Learn more here.


It’s Official:  Governor Newsom Signs Bill Requiring K-2 Screening

Governor Newsom signed the Education Omnibus Budget Trailer Bill (SB 114) today, which includes requiring K-2 universal screening for reading difficulties, including risk of dyslexia!  Read more here from the bill sponsor, Decoding Dyslexia CA.

Overcoming Dyslexia

Dyslexia is everywhere, touching so many children and adults, and while science has made extraordinary progress in understanding and clarifying the condition, this incredibly powerful knowledge rarely reaches those who most need to know and would greatly benefit from it. Our goal is to change all this with the Coursera you are about to view, produced by Dr. Sally Shaywitz, the Audrey G. Ratner Professor in Learning Development, both the leading scientist studying dyslexia and the most devoted advocate for helping those who are dyslexic.


NEW FACT SHEET!

IDA just published a new fact sheet in the Dyslexia Library It’s about phoneme awareness, why it’s necessary, and how it develops. In it, you will find tips for effective practices to build children’s phoneme awareness in kindergarten, first grade, and beyond.
 
IDA is providing this fact sheet to support classroom teachers who are currently engaged in the important work of implementing what is currently known from the science of reading. Released with an understanding that research in the future may provide even more powerful pathways for reading success, this fact sheet presents guiding principles for instruction informed by research today.

Dyslexia Devoted Podcast

Dyslexia Devoted is dedicated to all things related to dyslexia and is designed for both parents and educators to learn more about dyslexia. In each episode, Lisa Parnello will cover topics including instructional strategies, common challenges for people with dyslexia, and interviews with special guests.
 

 


IDA Dyslexia Handbook: What Every Family Should Know

IDA Dyslexia Handbook CoverIn addition to offering valuable information about dyslexia and its characteristics, this handbook provides information on assessments, effective teaching approaches, self-advocacy ideas, and a vast array of resources.

Further, the handbook contains information that will be useful throughout a child’s life, from elementary school through college. The degree of difficulty a child with dyslexia has with reading, spelling, and/or speaking varies from person to person due to inherited differences in brain development, as well as the type of teaching the child receives.

It is crucial to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of dyslexia so that a child can be evaluated early and obtain the appropriate instruction and accommodations he or she needs to succeed in school.

We encourage you to share this handbook. The more families we can inform, the more children we can help!

  • Dyslexia is the most common learning disability with 15-20% of the population showing symptoms of dyslexia. Learn More

  • It is a language-based learning disability and is not related to intelligence– plenty of very bright people have dyslexia.
  • There are many successful people with dyslexia such as Henry Winkler, Caitlyn Jenner (previously known as Bruce Jenner), Whoopi Goldberg and Charles Schwab.
  • IDA has established standards for teachers of reading. These research-based standards are helpful for all and critical for students with dyslexia.
