Each year at its annual membership meeting, IDA NorCal honors someone for extraordinary local leadership and accomplishment in the field of dyslexia. This year’s honoree is Jessica Hamman, founder and CEO of Marin-based Glean Education, which provides accessible and affordable structured literacy training for educators. Hamman grew up in a family of education professionals, including father Emerson Dickman, who served as past president of the International Dyslexia Association and helped create the definition of dyslexia. She watched her parents advocate for her brother with dyslexia in the public school system. Thirty years later she began advocating for her own son with the condition. She found, however, that even with the many advances in research and policy in the intervening years, little had changed when it came to school experiences for children with dyslexia. Hamman found that the biggest barrier was accessible and affordable training for educators. In 2015, she and her team began building the courses that became Glean Education’s Online Learning Academy, and have subsequently worked with schools, districts and states to maximize impact. In the past 10 years more than 15,000 educators across the country have taken Glean’s courses. On behalf of IDA NorCal, thank you, Jessica, for all you do for our community.
