This presentation will examine some of the increasing research in cognitive neuroscience and education on the different effects of digital and print mediums on the development of reading in children and adolescents. There will be no binary description, but rather an examination of the advantages and disadvantages for each medium on the development of deep reading processes like background knowledge, inference, empathy, critical thinking, and the contemplative function underlying insight and creative thought. The goal of this presentation is a hopeful, but cautionary approach to the use of digital mediums in reading development in different individuals, including those with dyslexia.
