“I read a book one day and my whole life was changed.”  Orhan Pamuk

Mine too, what a gift.

But when my son could not read a book, my whole life changed as well.   For many of our members whose lives have been changed by dyslexia,  NorCal IDA strives to be the catalyst to shift that reality.  Yes, they can learn to read! And write and spell!

One way we do this is by providing teacher training and scholarships so our educators can provide the type of instruction all of our children need.  This summer several Orton Gillingham-based trainings are being held in the Bay Area.  In addition, ongoing trainings are offered throughout the year. Check our website for more details.

Another way we change lives is by presenting our Experience Dyslexia® simulations. When people participate, they are often shocked by the challenges as well as the strengths of those with dyslexia. Check our website for more information on how to hold your own simulation or schedule one through our office.

Finally, we strongly support California Senate  Bill SB 691, which will provide universal screening for risk of dyslexia.  The bill unanimously passed the Senate Education Committee on March 29  and goes next to the Senate Appropriations Committee. You can track the progress of this bill through our legislature and learn how to voice your support at Decoding Dyslexia CA.  Our students deserve identification and the early intervention proven to make a lasting difference in their lives.
